What Does ㅋㅋㅋ Mean? A Korean Texting Survival Guide

You text your Korean friend:

You: I just got on the wrong subway. Again.

Your friend:

First of all, rude.

Second, no—their keyboard isn’t broken. They’re laughing.

ㅋㅋㅋ is basically the Korean cousin of “haha” or “lol.” It comes from the sound 크크크 (keu-keu-keu), a kind of chuckling laugh.

But the number of s matters more than you might expect.

You: I ate your ice cream.

Friend:

One single ?

That is not a warm laugh. That is a tiny laugh wearing a cold jacket.

Depending on the conversation, can feel dry, awkward, sarcastic, or even slightly annoyed. If you’re still learning Korean texting, maybe don’t begin your career with one lonely .

Friend:
I’m late again.

You: ㅋㅋ 또?
Lol, again?

ㅋㅋ is a small, casual laugh. Friendly enough, but you’re probably not crying with laughter.

I’m starting my diet tomorrow.

Friend:
You said that last week too, lol.

ㅋㅋㅋ is the safe, everyday version. It sounds friendly and helps make a sentence feel lighter.

When in doubt, three is a good number.

Friend:
I went to work wearing slippers today.

HAHAHAHA—nobody told you?

Now we’re actually laughing.

There is no official limit. Koreans usually keep pressing until the keyboard accurately represents their emotional condition.

Does More Than Laugh

Sometimes ㅋㅋㅋ means “that’s funny.” Sometimes it means “I’m joking.”

And sometimes it means: Please don’t make this conversation awkward. Here, have some laughter.

Could you possibly get me coffee too? Haha.

The laugh makes the request sound lighter. But it is not magic.

Please do not text your boss:

오늘 대신 일해 주세요 ㅋㅋㅋ
Please work for me today, lol.

The ㅋㅋㅋ will not protect you.

So, How Many Should You Use?

  • — “heh” or possibly “I’m judging you”
  • ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ — either comedy gold or your friend fell asleep on the keyboard

That’s it. You can now survive approximately 40% more Korean group chats.

Next time, we’ll meet ㅎㅎ—the softer, quieter cousin of ㅋㅋㅋ. And yes, they feel completely different.

New here? Start with the many meanings of 괜찮아.
