What Does 헐 Mean? Korea’s Tiny Word for Big Reactions

You’re having a normal day. Then your friend sends this:

Friend:
I found my phone in the refrigerator.

You:
…What?

That is (heol): one tiny syllable carrying an impressive amount of disbelief.

Depending on the situation, it can mean “OMG,” “no way,” “what the heck,” “seriously?” or simply “I need a moment.”

헐 for Shocking News

Friend:
Min-su is getting married next month.

You: 헐, 진짜?
OMG, really?

No full sentence required. arrives, looks shocked, and does its job.

헐 for Bad Surprises

Apparently the café is closed today.

Friend:
No way… after we came all this way?

The dots matter. 헐… often feels more disappointed or speechless than an energetic 헐!

헐 for Someone’s Questionable Decisions

Friend:
I turned off my alarm and went back to sleep.

Oh wow, lol. So were you late?

Adding ㅋㅋ softens the reaction and makes it playful. Without it, might sound more genuinely concerned—or more judgmental.

헐 vs. 대박

These two often appear in similar situations, but the emotional flavor is different.

— Wow, that’s amazing!
— What?! I can’t believe that.
— Wow… that’s huge.
— Oh no / What the heck / I am speechless.

Friend:
I won a free trip to Jeju!

You: 대박!
That’s amazing!

Friend:
But I read the date wrong, so I can’t go.

You: 헐…
Oh no…

A complete emotional journey in two syllables.

Should You Use It With Your Boss?

Probably not as your opening move. is very casual and can sound childish or too blunt in formal settings.

With friends and online? Completely normal. In a job interview? Let’s keep safely inside your head.

The Quick Rule

Use when something makes your brain pause for a second. Good news, bad news, strange news—it works as long as surprise is involved.

And if the surprise is especially wonderful, you can always upgrade to: 헐, 대박!
