대박 (daebak) originally refers to a big hit or jackpot. In everyday Korean, it has escaped the lottery booth and now appears basically everywhere.
It can mean “awesome,” “wow,” “no way,” or “that’s crazy.” Sometimes all four at once.
When Something Is Amazing
Friend: 나 시험 만점 받았어.
I got a perfect score on the test.
You: 대박! 진짜?
Wow! Really?
This is classic 대박: happy surprise with a little sparkle.
When Something Is Shocking
Friend: 어제 지갑 잃어버렸는데 오늘 찾았어.
I lost my wallet yesterday, but found it today.
You: 대박… 어디서 찾았어?
No way… Where did you find it?
Nothing is necessarily “awesome” here. The speaker is just surprised.
When 대박 Becomes Sarcastic
You: 배달 시켰는데 젓가락이 안 왔어.
I ordered delivery, but they forgot the chopsticks.
Friend: 와, 대박이다.
Wow. Amazing.
This is the Korean version of saying “Great. Just great.” Tone has entered the chat.
A bright 대박! sounds excited. A slow 와… 대박이다 can mean the exact opposite.

대박 is casual. Use it with friends, in comments, or in relaxed conversation. During a formal presentation, shouting 대박! at your director’s quarterly results may create a different kind of memorable moment.
